AçıklamaDesign Principles of Trusses2. GENERAL INFORMATIONS Trusses are structures composed of slender straight bars whose members are in tension or compression only. Truss members, which are two-force members, are connected at their extremities only. A truss is arranged in the form of one or more triangles. Trusses are commonly employed in bridges, towers, and roof structures. They use material very efficiently and are consequently economical for spanning distances up to several hundred feet. Trusses may be used to span distances from 30 ft to 1000 ft. Trusses are usually made of steel or timber, and rarely of reinforced concrete because of its large dead load and low strength in tension. The bars of steel trusses may be steel trusses may be single, double angles or channels, tubes, or even I-sections. Timber truss members have rectangular cross-sections. Since steel members are usually more slender than timber members, truss configurations with shorter compressive members are more suitable for steel structures.
