| Açıklama | GAZI UNIVERSITY ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE FACULTY MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT MALTEPE – ANKARA MATERIAL’S SCIENCE LAB.REPORT METALLOGRAPHIC EXAMINATION MECHANICAL TESTING AND PROPERTIES İlgi Doğru 001150019 NÖ(01) METALLOGRAPHIC EXAMINATION: Metallography is a method of observing the structure of metal through its surface. Metallographic observations could be carried out on plain surfaces to study the microstructural details or on fractured surfaces to study the mode of cracking and failure of metals. Examinations should be complete in every respect for it to be reliable. Factors which affect the accuracy of these examinations are sampling, preparation, and microscopy. Purpose: Our aim was to obtain information about microstructure of construction steel which has alloying addition mainly carbon. Method: We carried out our microexamination in three stage: sampling, preparation, and microscopy. At first stage, in sampling, we took cut samples, whose surfaces have anisotropy ( equiaxed grains and elongate grains ) . These samples were cut before attending the surface heat, because overheating will be change the microstructure, and nearly 10´10mm in dimensions. The second stage, preparation has different operations like mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching. When we made mounting, we took a cylindrical flexible plastic die, then put the specimen inside this and covered completely with a thermosetting liquid ( 50 ml liquid polyesther with 10-15 drops of hardener ) . Also we made these operations on a glass. This was be a cold mounting. After half an hour we took our sample, which was left before for harden, to pass grinding. We made grinding with abrasive papers which have special mesh size like 80, 280, 500, 1200 under water flow. ( Water prevent sample from heating.)
