Açıklama The Urbanization Process in Istanbul Urbanization is a process with the relations of social, economic and political structures. We have to conceptualize “urbanism as a way of life” as Louis Wirth nicely puts. In Turkey, after the 1950’s, Istanbul attracted mass migrations that led Istanbul to reach its today’s social, economic, political structure, which in return determined the physical changes, structure and the development of Istanbul. In this paper I will study the reasons and the consequences of the urbanization in Turkey, especially in Istanbul. The main topics are the mutual affection of space and people, emergence of metropolitan cities, the Industrial Revolution, specialization of manufacturing and finance, rapid migration, rapid urbanization, new occupational structure, and the reality of squatter settlements. “Urban spaces are created by people, and they draw their character from the people that inhabit them” (Knox 3). As people live and work in urban spaces, they use, modify and adjust the environment in order to satisfy their needs. Also, at the same time, they adapt their environment and people. The urban social geographers call this process a “sociospatial dialectic” in which “neighborhoods and communities are created, maintained and modified; the values, attitudes and behavior of their inhabitants, meanwhile, cannot help but be influenced by their surroundings and by the values, attitudes and behavior of the people around them” (Knox 3). Also the human ecology perspective suggests that “people create their cities but then cities shape their lives” (Abu-Lughod 190). Therefore, we can also state that the social relations are constituted, constrained and mediated by space (Knox 3). Throughout the history, humanity experienced two substantial revolutions: the Agricultural Revolution and the Industrial Revolution.
